Wow, even though my hair has always grown long, I don't think I've let it grow quite this long since I was pregnant with my son (over 17 years ago!). So this is where my SLs have brought me after a mere year and I really like the results. Looking at these pics makes me wish I'd have remembered to measure my hair while it was down yesterday, but I didn't think of it at the time.
I have an up-do at the moment which I am also loving, so I won't be taking it a down for a minute. My consultant and I have agreed to start clipping off the relaxer at my Jan 08 retightening. Unless I change my mind and delay the inevitable a bit longer, I plan to have all of the relaxer off by the spring (I need at least a little something to keep my head warm until then). I think I have about 6" of natural SL'd hair right now so it will feel and maybe look like a drastic change, but at the same time I am looking forward to seeing how my locks look "totally naturale".
I feel especially blessed to be able to pass on the experience and message that if for any reason you are a sister that prefers to keep some or all of your relaxed length while your SLs are developing, first of all know that there is no shame and nothing wrong with this approach. This is your journey and, as such, you never need to feel that you have to justify keeping your relaxed ends for or to anyone. Assuming you've chosen SisterLocks because you want to go totally natural, you'll likely already be aware that the relaxer has to go eventually and you'll want that. When, how fast and how much is totally up to you, keeping in mind input from your consultant. Second, keeping your relaxed hair can be done without bunching and tangling drama, as long as your consultant knows how to manage it correctly and you follow her instructions. There are some consultants that won't install SLs with any relaxer still in the hair. This is way cool too. In my case, I was extremely fortunate to find a consultant who, among other things, knew how to work with relaxed ends and who also put my relaxed hair in the SLs pattern (as you'll see elsewhere in my blog and/or in my Fotki, I began this journey with approximately 3" of natural hair and my total length was at least 8", probably more). It would be many months before I realized that she had even done this; I guess I just never thought about it until I kept reading posts about others having trouble with their relaxed ends. It was sort of like a lightbulb moment. Since relaxed hair will never lock (at least prob not in my lifetime), my consultant did this for the sake of manageability and consistency (I'm actually guessing this because I keep forgetting to ask her why she made this choice, but knowing her professionalism and dedication to her work ... ). Besides being extremely precise, my consultant also has the added advantage of being very fast, so any extra time added on to do this during my installation was minimal. Thank goodness! Just more proof for me that Divine Guidance led me to her (and Lord knows I said some serious prayers about this thang before I jumped in) and to Sisterlocks!!

Looking good Lady!
I love, Love, LOVE the up-do! It is too, TOO cute. You have a very nice profile.
I am so glad I was all-natural because I would definitely have had trouble parting with the length once I had gotten used to it.
AS I have said on my blog, my hair grows pretty fast too, but it hasn't been long since I was a child because I'm always doing something I shouldn't to it, so I am looking forward to acquiring some length.
I am already at 9 months, so I know what I can expect at one year and it won't really be shoulder length yet, but I'm hoping that by this time next year mine will be as long as yours is now.
Thanks for keeping us posted!
Take care!
Thanks for stopping by BR! Yes, I wore a TWA about 2-3 times in my life and absolutely loved it. As a matter of fact, the last time I wore one I thought that would be the style I'd wear to my grave (except I know now that SLs will be - lol!). But once I'd taken the time to grow it back (with a relaxer), I wasn't feeling the really short length again, at least not at this time in my life and I was too impatient to wait for my natural hair to grow more than 3" to get SLs. But by the early spring, I think I'll like having my length cut back to a liberating length of about 6" because (as you well know) it gets pretty hot here in the Carolinas at that time of year. Time will tell and so will my blog. ;-)
Your hair looks great! I love the updo. Once you cut the permed ends off you will fall deeper in love with your Sisterlocks. I look forward to seeing updates!
Wow, I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but when you ladies let me know you've visited my blog, I really feel like an old friend(s) has stopped by. So MANY thanks for your encouragement and wonderful feedback. Sistalocd, I DO feel ready to take this love affair to the next level, so it's encouraging to know that I have that to look forward to. I know your hands are just a bit fuller these days, so EXTRA special thanks to you for stopping by and leaving me love.
Your growth is phenomenal! That is a lot of hair for just a year. I looked at your fotki as well. You will love the complete natural look I'm sure. I just became part of the family last week! I can't wait to see what a year will bring for me.
I really love up do's and yours is very nice. I am trying not to style or anything for a couple of months since it's so fresh. A lot of unknowns in this journey so I am trying to take the advice of my consultant.
Have a great holiday and please visit my site.

Please post your "cut off" at your next tightening. I will be keeping up with you!
Peace!
WOW. Your beautiful curls have inspired me to try them and I love them. Now I have to try a style like this one. I'm loving it. I never knew your hair was that long. You are so beautiful. Use your Little Richard voice and tell folks to 'Shut up and get out the way." LOL. Don't hurt them though.
I absolutely love the updo. I also have permed ends. Thank you for your comment about the ends. I have gotten negative comments from some. I agree that it is up to the individual and there is nothing wrong with holding on to it until u feel comfortable letting it go.
Congratulations on reaching year one! Your locks look absolutely gorgeous. Looking forward to see the new look after you cut off the relaxed ends.
Thanks for the encouragement on locking with relaxed ends! I'm going to be in that camp soon and have been waffling back and forth over cutting my hair down to the new growth. Your most recent update seals the deal for me.
God bless you, Blessed Gem!
Cute hair style....Yeah, you might need a little hair to get you through the winter months but go for it and cut that perm out...I can't wait to see the finished product.
'Course I had to come back and see what everyone said...
Hot as it was last summer...my Sls kept me cool and stylish all season long...never a worry about the heat or the humidity. I literally didn't sweat it at all!
I thought I said this when I stopped by the first time, but I appreciate your words of encouragment for those who hang on to the relaxed ends.
For me, that is one of the best 'selling points' for Sls over other forms of locking. You don't have to go for the big chop or sacrifice style options to go natural.
When I first transitioned into natural hair through kinky twists years ago before I ever heard of sisterlocks, I basically did this.
My hair was about the same length it is now and it looked like it wasn't growing because every month I cut off about half an inch of the relaxer from the ends.
It was more comforting to me and convenient for styling to cut a little at a time as opposed to doing the TWA at that time - although I have done it several times in my life as well.
But I was SO HAPPY when the last of the relaxed hair was gone! It seemed so lifeless and artificial next to my stronger, textured natural hair...I really couldn't wait to be rid of it.
I think it gets easier to nix the relaxed hair once the natural hair is in the majority...as long as there is more processed hair than natural it's still a little difficult to cut it. However once it gets to a certain point (which is different for everyone) you just feel like the relaxer HAS GOT TO GO - even if it does mean shorter hair. And a lot of people seem to reach that point sooner than they thought they would.
Even though I am not judgmental of those who choose to keep the relaxer - the overwhelming sentiments I hear are that individuals feel really liberated and happy that the relaxer is finally gone and they are all-natural even though they may occasionally miss the length.
I hear a lot of: I should have done it sooner, my locks seem healthier and 'more real' now. And it is their own description/perception, not what others are telling them.
But that is the thing about locks of any kind...it's a journey and you get there when you get there (there being any number of different milestones along the way.)
Well...that's my two cents (...times 10! - ha!)
I started with relaxer and never wore natural hair my whole entire life. Do not worry about losing the relaxer, I had never had short hair and I was full of joy once I lost those relaxed ends. You may never need to cut your hair. You could tell I had two textures going on and it looked crazy. Your up-do is to die for. I can not wait until I can pull my hair up. I like my hair being short too !
Wow! Each and every comment that I've read here has been so meaningful. And BR, feel free to stop by and add more "cents" anytime. ;-) My SL experience is that much richer for what you ALL have shared and I'll be sure to keep you posted as I proceed through the "relaxer all gone" stages. With all of the support I get from my SL community, these next steps are sure to add more fun to my journey!
Carmen, I had to come back and tell you that YOU are the one!!
Big thanks for the love and also for my most recent and gorgeous TT/earrings set -- Ocean -- such a cool blue. And since I forgot I ordered it, it was a nice holiday gift waiting for me when I got back in town. Tomoka Ties are so sa-weet for an updo! ;-)
Loving the updo... my, oh my, your locs are growing fast... looking forward to seeing the update after the 8th.
blessings~
Congrats! Your locs are lovely. Please post pics once you cut the ends.
Your hair is looking good girl :) I like your up-do!!!
Thank you Abena! I'm sort of looking forward to a week or so from now when the chopping will begin. ;-)
Your updo is gorgeous and your locks look great. I am soon to be sisterlocked and your input on relaxed ends was insightful. Thanks so much...I plan to get my 6 inces of relaxed hair in the pattern as well.
Where are you? How are you doing? I'll have to call you. I'll be in Charlotte tomorrow.
you have been tagged please check my blog for rules.
I'm right on your tail. Not locks but hoping that I get more and more length and healthiness!
Wow your hair is really nice! I can't wait until I have some length like yours. I am a newbie, just recently locked on Feb 11th of this year.
Guess what? You've been tagged!
The rules of being tagged are posted at my blog at http://ebonygirl-mysisterlocksjourney.blogspot.com/
Hello BGL,
Your hair looks beautiful. I feel like I may be looking at myself in a year or so. (I don't think I'll be trimming my permed ends anytime soon!) Keep on blogging!
Very, very lovely. The up-do is my favorite.
Lovely!! And the relaxed ends don't appear to be giving you any problems at all. Your hair looks beautiful and so do you in that lovely updo.
Your hair and it's color is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
You've been tagged - check the blog.
I know you've posted this a couple of years ago... but you are one of my sisterlock inspirations! I came across your blog after googling sisterlocks and relaxed hair.
I am currently relaxed... hope to be sisterlocked by January 2010 (waiting for the new growth). My hair is past APL right now so I don't want to chop off the relaxed ends right away... I am shooting for a year after being SL'd.. maybe more or less.
I know you don't post often but this blog has already been a blessing to me. I hope all is well!
